v0.32.0 ·

Nothing Lost

This is the first update built entirely from closed testing. Twelve of you played the game for days, wrote down every rough edge you hit, and sent screenshots of most of them, and nearly everything below exists because one of you took the time to say something. Every bit of it was welcome. Thank you, and keep it coming.

Combat stops dropping you offline

Pressing a stance ability, or drinking a potion, could put the app on "Offline, showing last save" while the realm was perfectly healthy, and nothing you did afterwards counted until you restarted. Every buff carries a small note saying which other buff it replaces, and the app had never been taught that word, so it threw away the entire update rather than the one line it did not recognise. Because the same check runs on both sides, the server was refusing to send what the app was refusing to read, which is why some of you saw an internal server error in the same breath. It has been taught the word. This was the loudest thing in the test and it is gone.

What you craft cannot vanish

Smelt a few hundred bars into a nearly full vault and the ore could be spent, the levels granted, and the bars nowhere, with nothing on screen to say the vault was full. The extra vault slot you earn through Starcalling was counted when the game asked "may I spend these materials" and forgotten when it asked "may I keep the result", so the two questions disagreed and you paid for the difference. They agree now, the slot you earned shows in your capacity, and a craft that has nowhere to go stops before it takes anything.

Your tools moved out of the vault

Fifteen professions with a tool apiece was half a starting vault spent on things you never choose between, never sell on purpose, and cannot get back. Tier tools now live in a toolshed of their own and take no vault space at all. Your first tool in every profession is a gift from its master rather than a purchase, tools can no longer be sold by accident, and armour and weapons you are actually wearing no longer hold a vault slot as well.

A way back into your account

One of you lost a character with no way to prove it was yours. If you lose your password now there is a reset: ask for a code, six digits arrive by email, you set a new password in the app and every other device is signed out. Securing an account by email also sends a confirmation, so the one action whose entire purpose is telling you your progress is safe finally says so in writing.

The first hour explains itself

Wulfe hands you a kit before he sends you into a fight rather than after it. Quest steps take you to the screen they are talking about instead of leaving you to find it. A tier you are not equipped for names the tool, the master who wants it and where it comes from, rather than repeating the same red sentence across twenty recipes. The codex and the market are searchable, a material you are missing can be tapped to see where it drops, and every stat pill on an item will tell you what that stat actually does.

Kinder to your battery

The gold lettering shimmered as you tilted your phone, which meant the app read the motion sensor thirty times a second for as long as it was open and repainted every gilded word each time. Several of you watched the battery fall twenty points in an afternoon. It looked lovely and it cost more power than the game itself, so it is gone, along with a second sensor that was left running behind the Starcalling sky even when you were somewhere else entirely.

Fixes

  • Forging Steel Chainmail asked for iron bars. So did the Steel Sword and the Steel Mace. All three were renamed to steel when the ladder was rebuilt and their ingredients were never moved with them, so you were buying the wrong metal for the right recipe. Every steel recipe now asks for steel, and a check now compares each recipe against the metal in its own name.
  • The combat log stayed empty in dungeons if you fight with spells. Swings were written to it and casts were not, so a caster watched a blank feed for an entire run while the same fight in the combat grounds read perfectly. Casts, damage over time and healing are all written now.
  • A stance ability that unlocks at combat level 30 could be pressed from level 1. The ability page checked whether you owned the ability and not whether you had reached the level that grants it.
  • The tier headings on a skill page still read Mithril, Adamant and Rune. Those are the old names for Tectonite, Lunarite and Solarite, so the heading and the recipe directly beneath it disagreed with each other. The headings follow the material names now.
  • Three things in the guild screen were dead ends. The name of a guild could not be read while you typed it, because the text was drawn in the same colour as the box. Tapping the leader of a guild did nothing at all, since the row refused every action rather than offering the one you can always use, which is looking at their profile. And guild and player names could be tapped over and over, stacking screens you then had to back out of one at a time.
  • Coal, and every other tier 3 material, said it needed a steel tool while the ladder underneath listed steel twice and skipped bronze entirely, so there was no way to read what you were actually missing. The ladder runs bronze, iron, steel again.
  • Herbalism, mining and smithing asked for a tool one full tier above the work in front of you. The card looked at the tier of the thing being made rather than the tier of the job, and those two do not always match, so it reached into the next tier up and named a tool you had no reason to own yet.
  • Cut gems asked for a second set of gem cutting tools on top of the jewelcrafting tools you already owned, and the message saying so was large and white while the line telling you where to buy the tool was small and yellow underneath it. The extra requirement is gone.
  • The back arrow on a banner was a thin mark on bright artwork with almost nothing to aim at. It is drawn on a dark disc now, at a size a thumb can actually hit.
  • Your gold is now shown on the screen where you buy vault slots, rather than only on the screen you came from.
  • Items you are wearing are marked in the vault, and a woven piece shows its weave on a second line instead of choosing between the two facts.
  • The tap to continue prompt sat behind the Android navigation bar on some phones, so the story appeared to stop with nothing to press.
  • The opening video played its sound even with the phone on silent and ignored your in game audio settings. It respects both now.
  • Dialogue types itself out rather than appearing all at once, the whole card advances it instead of a small arrow, and the speaker no longer slides around as the text grows.
  • Attack, Strength, Defence and Ranged all claimed five percent per level on their skill pages. They give one point, and Defence was describing a formula the game stopped using some time ago. The pages now say what the engine does, and those numbers are read from the engine so the two cannot drift apart again.
  • The skill pages carried a second line of flavour text underneath the plain description that mostly restated it in worse words. It has been removed.
  • Two crafting materials shipped as blank squares. Another thirty six items, a ring and a pendant among them, had a white patch behind them instead of a transparent background, which showed as a pale box around the item wherever it appeared.
  • The Tectonite Gauntlets were rendered so bright they looked like they came from a different set than the rest of the tectonite plate. They have been redone against the armour they are worn with.
  • Starcalling could open to an empty sky. The aurora effect was compiled the moment the screen was loaded rather than when it was drawn, and on a device where that failed it took the whole screen down with it before anything appeared. The effect now fails quietly and the sky is drawn without it. Starcalling also keeps counting while you are on another screen.
